5 Burro is a Salsa Slam Sponsor: Every year we plan our hearts out for Guactacular, then it comes and goes and we have to wait another year for the fun of Guacamole and strangers. So we decided to end that pain by adding another awesome event to make your tastebuds tingle. SALSA SLAM. View article here
With the last days of summer simmering away, we decided to take a little leisurely stroll over the Brooklyn Bridge and head to one of the best newish Mexican eateries on the map now. Just three months in existence, 5 Burro was opened by husband-and-wife team George and Marla Cornejo (he’s the brother of sleek-chic NYC designer, Maria Cornejo, wouldn’t you know) on a quiet waterfront stretch of Brooklyn’s Columbia Street. At first glance, this vibrant little restaurant might seem slight on space, but drift back through the bright and cheery front room to the wide-open back garden for some serious spicy-delicious fare. view article
Longtime mom and pop vintage stores and boutiques remain as favorites, such as General Nightmare Antiques on Columbia Street, which sells used furniture dating back to the 1950s. But new choices are emerging, such as 5 Burro Café, a Mexican restaurant that has another location in Forest Hills. View article here
There’s oro in them thar hills. Against all odds—Forest Hills ain’t rowdy—5 Burro is a kick-ass, rock-juked Mexican cantina drawing drinkers and diners alike. Tables in the small back room are packed by 7:30pm. Start with a strong, slushy margarita (lime and strawberry stand out) and sensational nachos con carne, topped with a heap of tender marinated steak. Keep the meat coming with first-rate beef fajitas. The Mexican cooks’ creations are dependably delicious and generous; you’ll be the burro packing leftovers home. View article here
This Forest Hills hangout has everything you love about clichéd Mexican bars—papier-mâché parrots, red chili-pepper lights, even a slushie machine pumping out frozen margaritas. Owners Marla and George Cornejo certainly have a sense of humor, but they’re serious about their booze: Those potent margaritas are served in generous mason jars, and there are 15 types of bottled beer, including a range of Mexican suds like Pacifico and Negro Modelo. Having some free time on my hands now that my significant other is away. My good friends Dan and Nechama thought some Margaritas were in order… I can’t argue when Margaritas are on the line. And I have already been to 5 Burro Cafe, but this time I was determined to take blog worthy photos… View article here
